This is considered one of the richest areas in biological diversity in Costa Rica and the world!
The wildlife in this area is truly spectacular, especially the birds. Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is one of the few places in Costa Rica where you can catch a glimpse of the exotic Jabiru Stork, the tallest flying bird found in Central and South America. You will get the opportunity to likely see wood storks, cormorants, and other varieties of birds — this is a must-do tour for avid birdwatchers! Plus, everyone loves to spot sloths, howler monkeys, and caimans (like mini-crocodiles) that inhabit this lush area.
The Rio Frio river is teeming with life at almost every turn. Also found in near along the edge of this nature reserve are Spider, Capuchin, and howler monkeys, crocodiles, jaguars, cougars, tayras, ocelots, tapirs, white-tailed deer, Jesus-Christ lizards, black river turtles, and enormous orange iguanas.
As you venture from La Fortuna to Caño Negro, the travel time is approximately 1.5 hours. Upon arrival, you’ll board a comfortable boat at the Los Chiles dock, equipped with a shaded top for your comfort. Don’t forget to bring your hat, sunscreen, camera, and binoculars to enhance your experience. The boat journey along the edge of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge on Rio Frio lasts about 2 hours, with opportunities for a photo stop at the Nicaraguan border.
During the tour, we’ll also take a break to stretch our legs and enjoy a delightful riverside picnic under the shade of trees that grace this picturesque river.
Afterward, we’ll return to the boat and continue our expedition back to the Los Chiles dock, from where you’ll head back to La Fortuna. This unforgettable adventure promises cherished memories and captivating photos to share with friends and family.
